I remember when I first started my Praxis journey. I had anointed myself a trait and reputation of being essentially fearless.
However, that was not always the case. When I was going through the application process, I was terrified of a few things.
- Being on camera
- Interviews
- Asking for help
When I tell you I was shaking and sweating for the one-way interview during the interview process, I’m not exaggerating. I mean, it’s a mix of being on camera, and an interview, and I only had one take.
I hated it. I got through it, and was rewarded with the personal interview, and finally
Practice makes perfect, they say, but practice also equals repetition. There’s that old saying about practicing the same thing not until you get it right, but until you can’t get it wrong.
I’ve been on camera countless times since starting the program, both for filming myself and for meetings. I still mess up and have to start my takes over. However,
I’ve also been on plenty of interviews. I’m getting more and more comfortable on them, and finally I’m able to tell stories relating to the question. For some reason phone interviews I still don’t really like, I do better over a zoom call, but I’ve had enough phone interviews recently that I’m much more comfortable.
Finally, I can ask for help more. I have tons of connections in the Praxis network, and if I have a question I know a certain person might have some insight on, I’m not afraid to ask.
It’s pretty cool how doing something over and over again helps you get over any fears and work out any kinks in your performance.
