How to Open a Blog Post. - Samantha Clarkson

I struggled with the first line of this post. I had a different idea to write about today, but I couldn’t figure out how to start that one.

There are a few ways you can draw your reader in with the first line.

Make a shocking Statement

This also applies to your title. Spin the contents of the post just a bit to get a title or opening sentence that people just have to read about. Don’t be afraid to offend people.

“Why I Kill Children” could be about metaphorically killing a brain child.

My blog post “Why You Should Stare at People” is a good example of this.

Open with a quote.

I do this in my post “Why Parks and Recreation is so Popular”. Find a quote that relates to your topic somehow and stick it in the beginning. Extra points if the quote is a shocking statement.

Open with a story

I do this in “If You Don’t Love Your Work, You’re Doing Life Wrong”. Tell a personal story that is fascinating and draws the reader in. Make fun of someone, people love seeing other people suffer. It’s amusing.

Even if you don’t know how to start a blog post, just start writing. Make your main point, then elaborate. You don’t have to write the beginning first.
