First impressions are not only important, but fairly common. Whether it’s going to an interview or talking to someone on the street, you want to make a good first impression.
Here are seven ways to do just that:
1. Firm Handshake
Assuming its a situation where a handshake is appropriate, you want to make sure yours is firm. Not painfully so, but strong enough to deliver a subconscious message. A weak handshake makes your character and intentions seem weak, while a strong one solidifies the moment and prepares both you and whoever you’re meeting for a purposeful interaction.
2. Smile
Don’t be creepy about it, but smiling shows interest and a good attitude towards being wherever you are. Only smile when appropriate, like when first meeting and when you’re about to leave. Otherwise, keep an engaged and interested expression.
3. Make Eye Contact
I think there’s actually some science behind this. If you take an extra second to notice the other person’s eye color when meeting them, it automatically makes them feel more connected to you
4. Clean Up
I mean your appearance. If you wear makeup, put on an appropriate amount in the appropriate colors. If you don’t make sure you get enough sleep the night before and that your skin care routine is on point. Brush your hair, wear nice, clean clothes, and make sure your breath doesn’t smell.
5. Don’t Talk Too Much
Ask a lot of questions, listen to what they have to say, don’t overshare or dominate the conversation.
6. Be Mindful of Your Posture/Body Language
A lot of communication is non-verbal. If you keep looking away or tapping your foot, they’re going to get the impression that you’re bored or impatient. Sit up straight, adjust your attitude to fit the situaiton.
7. Laugh
If it’s appropriate, laughing at the other person’s joke makes them feel good about themselves, and they’ll subconsciously want to keep you around. Who doesn’t want to be around people who laugh at their dumb jokes? Just don’t go overboard with the belly laughs.
Making a good first impression is crucial, and these seven tips are great for doing just that!
